Situated next to the Ken­net and Avon Ca­nal is Vic­to­ria Park, which features a boating lake, a bandstand, play areas, and gar­dens.

Situated in two historical buildings at Blake’s Lock is the Riv­er­side Mu­seum. This tells the story of Read­ing’s two rivers — the Ken­net and the Thames. The Screen House features a full-size caravan; the Tur­bine House has lovely views over the lock.

You can take a leisurely stroll along the towpaths beside the Ken­net and Avon Ca­nal; there you will find a myriad of narrow boats to look at, bridges to cross, and ducks and swans aplenty. Close by is Vic­to­ria Park, the perfect place to sit down in and relax after your walk.

At 1 The Wharf is West Berk­shire Mu­seum. Housed in the 17th-century Cloth Hall and 18th-century granary, there are displays on archaeology, geology, local history, and costume and ac­ces­so­ries.

In the town hall at Blagrave Street you will find Read­ing Mu­seum. It contains galleries relating to the history of Read­ing together with an art gallery and a full-size replica of the Ba­yeux tap­es­try.

At High­clere in Hamp­shire (post town New­bury, in case you were wondering) is High­clere Cas­tle. Built in Vic­to­rian style with richly decorated interiors to match, it is the ancestral home of the Earl of Caer­nar­fon. The house contains a wide range of collections and artefacts. There are also lovely parklands and gar­dens.
