Spitbank Fort

Ferries inside the Historic Dockyard in Portsea, Portsmouth, can take you to Spitbank Fort. This Victorian fortress, built in the Solent, is 1.6 km (1 mi) out from shore. Completed in 1878, its original purpose was to thwart the threat of invasion by the French.
