Parents want action over axed bus

03 Jun 2025

Parents in Surrey have launched a petition, calling on the county council to use government money to alleviate transport problems, after the authority cut a free school bus.

In December 2024, Surrey County Council said it would axe free school buses — running from East and West Molesey to Esher High School — one month after it announced more than £12 million of funding from the government to ‘boost bus services’.

The council advised children to ‘bring torches’ and ‘suitable footwear’ for their proposed walk to school, which was via alleyways, open fields, and unguarded viaduct sluice gates, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

A spokesperson said Surrey County Council was aware of the challenges that the parents had raised and was reviewing them carefully.
