Council to announce bus lane plans

15 Jan 2025

East Sussex County Council will announce its final plans for dedicated bus lanes in Newhaven after the consultation period ends tomorrow.

The authority has refined its proposals for full-time lanes — aimed at reducing congestion in the town centre — on a busy section of the A259.

A spokesperson for the council said: ‘The proposals for this section of the A259 have been refined further from the consultation proposals in 2023 to maximise the bus priority measures whilst also balancing the needs of other road users.’

Cllr James MacCleary, Lib Dem MP at East Sussex County Council for the Newhaven and Bishopstone division, described the present situation in the town centre as a ‘crisis’.
