Gilbert White’s House & Garden and the Oates Museum
Alton
This historic house at Selborne dates from the 16th century and was home to the Rev. Gilbert White (1720 – 1793) for most of his life. Furnished in 18th-century style, it has beautifully embroidered bed hangings and many portraits. There are also displays on the Oates family, including Capt. Lawrence Oates (1880 – 1912) of the ill-fated Robert (Falcon) Scott (1868 – 1912) expedition to the South Pole and Frank Oates (1840 – 1875), the Victorian explorer. Outside is a 2-ha (5-ac) garden with many original features.
